Interested in Korean beauty products with ethical operations? The Korean beauty market is experiencing a huge global boom! While once reserved for local consumers, many South Korean cosmetics companies are making a splash stateside. It’s estimated that K-beauty sales will reach $21.8 billion by 2026!
One cosmetics company that’s caught the eye of many is Dr. Jart. Promising specialized products to meet a wide range of needs, the brand is making a huge splash!
But is Dr. Jart cruelty-free? Understanding a brand’s stance on animal welfare is easier said than done. With radically different policies around the globe, we have to put the operations of international brands like Dr. Jart under some intense scrutiny.
About Dr. Jart
The Dr. Jart brand got its start in 2004 in Seoul, South Korea. It was founded by an entrepreneur who consulted closely with a licensed dermatologist. From the start, Dr. Jart pushed its dermatological efforts, merging the worlds of science and makeup artistry into one.
Interestingly enough, Dr. Jart did not focus its efforts on Korean markets at first. The founders sought out to tackle more difficult markets and hoped that their success would lead to local success.
Those efforts paid off! The brand had a presence in New York and started selling products in Sephora in 2011. It’s most notable effort is introducing the very first BB cream to the US market!
Dr. Jart is an ever-popular brand in the growing Korean Beauty trend. In 2019, Estee Lauder acquired Dr. Jart and its parent company.
Is Dr. Jart Cruelty-Free?
Unfortunately, Dr. Jart is not a cruelty-free company. The brand does permit animal testing and also hires third-party laboratories to perform testing where required by law.
One of the biggest red flags is the website. The US website does not make any mention of the brand’s stance on animal welfare. This alone says a lot about its operations.
With the growing trend of cruelty-free cosmetics, more and more brands are being vocal about its policies. The lack of transparency is not a good sign.
Dr. Jart’s Parent Company
As of 2019, Dr. Jart is under the Estee Lauder umbrella of brands. Estee Lauder isn’t cruelty-free either. Despite the brand’s huge presence in the industry, it’s not endorsed by any major animal rights groups or part of any cruelty-free programs.
The beauty conglomerate is pledging to adopt more ethical testing practices. But for now, it still benefits from dated policies.
Now, Estee Lauder does allow its brands to adopt their own operating policies. But, there’s one huge issue with Dr. Jart and Estee Lauder. That’s where the respective products are sold.
Does Dr. Jart Sell To Mainland China?
As of 2019, Dr. Jart makes its products to consumers in 37 different countries. Dr. Jart does sell to the Chinese market. Why does that matter?
Well, China still requires animal testing on all imported cosmetics products. So if a brand wants to sell there, they have to participate in testing.
Dr. Jart’s product line is enticing. There’s no way around that! The brand is contributing to the global Korean beauty market and making innovative products available to the masses.
However, that does come at a price. Dr. Jart is a brand that you should avoid if you prioritize animal welfare when shopping for cosmetics products.
