Is Neutrogena Cruelty Free

Is Neutrogena Cruelty-Free?

Want to learn more about Neutrogena’s stance on animal welfare? Animal testing has always been a hot-button topic. However, in recent decades, it’s been thrust to the forefront of consumer’s minds. Today, the demand for cruelty-free makeup and cosmetics products is at an all-time high and shows no signs of slowing down!

So that begs the question: Is Neutrogena cruelty free?

While it might seem like an easy enough question to answer, differing policies around the world and a lack of legal definitions stateside make things a bit hazy. To understand where Neutrogena fits into the cruelty-free market, we have to look into its operating policies and markets.

About Neutrogena

Chances are, you’ve come across Neutrogena products before! This brand is one of the biggest in the world. It’s readily available at most stores and currently sells in more than 70 different countries.

But it wasn’t always the success it is today.

Neutrogena started in 1930 as Natone. Back then, the brand had nothing to offer but a simple bar of soap. However, that simple bar of soap was a game-changer. The soap was able to restore the skin’s pH, making it a sought-after alternative to traditional cleaning products.

Before long, the founder of the company started working with a chemist to expand the product line. The new “Neutrogena” name was adopted in 1962 and the rest is history!

The brand continued to grow, popping up in stores around the world. In 1994, Johnson & Johnson acquired the brand. It’s still part of the Johnson & Johnson family to this day.

Is Neutrogena Cruelty-Free?

With its long history in the business, many adore Neutrogena. It’s a household staple that’s served generations.

However, its lasting stay in the cosmetics world does come at a price. Neutrogena is not a cruelty-free brand.

Despite the positive light that the brand has created for itself, it still benefits from animal testing. The brand has a page dedicated to the subject of product testing. There are a lot of great buzz words and marketing lingo in there. But, there’s also one glaring admission.

According to the website, Neutrogena tests on animals when required by law.

Are Neutrogena Products Sold In China?

As we mentioned earlier, the Neutrogena brand is available in more than 70 countries. One of those countries is China. Therein lies the biggest issue.

China still requires animal testing on all cosmetics products sold to consumers. That applies to local products and international imports.

We see this all of the time with large companies. Many say they are cruelty-free. However, tapping into the Chinese market automatically negates that! Thanks to a lack of legal definitions regarding the “cruelty-free” label, brands don’t really encounter any pushback.

While none of the products sold stateside are directly tested on animals, the company still benefits from the practice. That’s the case with Neutrogena.

There are signs that China’s policies will change in the near future. But until that happens, we can’t call Neutrogena cruelty-free

Neutrogena has a solid product line that’s affordable and readily available everywhere. But if animal welfare factors into your cosmetics purchasing decisions, Neutrogena is not the brand for you.

There’s no denying Neutrogena’s impact on the cosmetics world. But unfortunately, the brand is not cruelty-free. It still tests on animals to sell products in China.
