Are you on the hunt for cruelty-free cosmetics brands to try out? You’re not alone! If Internet search trends over the past few years tell us anything, more and more people are looking for brands that pay attention to animal welfare.
One brand you might have seen lining store shelves is OGX. With a tagline like “Beauty pure and simple,” you would think that this shampoo and body care brand utilized natural and ethically sourced ingredients.
So that begs the question: Is OGX cruelty-free?
About The OGX Brand
OGX is not a newcomer to the beauty industry by any means. It started several decades ago by Todd Christopher. A former hairdresser, Christopher started selling hair care products out of the trunk of his car before starting a full-fledged company.
That company, Vogue International, would go on to establish several big-name brands. The most successful of which was OGX, which began as Organix!
OGX started out with a modest line of natural products. However, the brand has grown significantly in recent years.
The brand’s parent company was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 2016, which led to even more growth. Today, you can find OGX products in grocery stores, drugstores, and pretty much anywhere that sells popular cosmetic products.
Is OGX Cruelty-Free?
Unfortunately, the OGX brand is not cruelty-free.
Currently, there are no legal definitions to define what “cruelty-free” means on a broader scale. But to the average consumer, it means that none of the brand’s products were tested on animals. OGX simply does not fit the bill.
The brand states this loud and clear on its website. According to the FAQ page, OGX doesn’t test its personal care products on animals anywhere in the world. But there are some exceptions. OGX states that it only tests on animals when required by law and where alternatives to validate data are not available.
Issues With OGX
OGX has been accused by many of misleading consumers in the past.
In fact, it was the target of a class-action lawsuit in 2013. Remember how we said that the OGX brand was originally called “Organix?” Well, this lawsuit played a big part in that change.
The suit alleged that the brand was falsely advertising its products as organic even though none of the items in the lineup had more than 10 percent organic ingredients. Organix eventually settled and changed its name.
But even then, many still think the new “OGX” moniker has misleading implications.
Organic ingredient aside, OGX has also experienced some controversy over its participation in animal testing. Here are some of the biggest reasons why the brand cannot be considered cruelty-free.
Johnson & Johnson Acquisition
After its acquisition by Johnson & Johnson in 2013, OGX adopted its parent company’s stance on animal testing. Johnson & Johnson only test on animals when required by law or when no alternatives exist.
The thing is, many brands have seen wild success without having to test on animals at all! It’s all about how the company chooses to do business.
OGX doesn’t provide a ton of clarity about when or how often animal testing occurs. For all we know, the brand could be working with ingredient suppliers or manufacturers that participate in animal testing.
But the biggest issue with OGX and Johnson & Johnson’s approach to animal testing is using it when no alternatives exist. The truth is: there are several alternatives! Unilever, one of Johnson & Johnson’s biggest competitors has made great strides in finding alternative testing methods that keep animal welfare in mind. Unilever isn’t fully cruelty-free by any means, but at least the company is doing its part to eliminate it for many of the brands in its portfolio.
Selling To The Chinese Market
Here is the biggest problem with OGX. It started selling its products to the Chinese market in 2015. Why is this a bad thing?
China is one of the few countries that require all cosmetics products to be tested on animals. It doesn’t matter if a brand never tests on animals for other markets. If it wants to sell products in China, which is a large market, then it must test its products first.
There lies the problem. By selling to consumers in mainland China, OGX automatically lost its cruelty-free status. PETA, an animal welfare organization that once endorsed OGX, officially removed the brand’s certification when OGX expanded to China.
We’re sad to say, but OGX is not cruelty-free. OGX is present in the Chinese market, which means that it tests on animals. Not only that, but the brand is owned by Johnson & Johnson, a corporation that doesn’t have the best reputation among animal activist groups.
There are plenty of great cosmetics brands that are truly cruelty-free. Go with those instead!
